The Curleys - a cheerful, noisy, close Irish family - are unsettled when daughter Sharon announces that she is pregnant. To make matters worse she refuses to name the father. She tells friends that he is a Spanish sailor. When George Burgess - the father of Sharon's friend Yvonne - leaves his wife, he is revealed as the mystery man. But, in spite of the rows, their struggle to come to terms with the pregnancy is a comic process of discovery and love.
